Dog crate
This dog crate is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. It offers your pup a den that is comfortably dark while still allowing a view outside. Designed to fit a golden retriever, it accommodates a standard large dog bed. The door conveniently tucks into the side when open, and the crate's overall design blends into your living room decor.

Design Overview
This dog crate was designed with a focus on both functionality and aesthetics, keeping the lifetime comfort of the dog (and convenience to the dog-owner) in mind. The interior dimensions are based on standardized measurements for large dogs, providing ample space for movement and comfort. The crate also fits an off-the-shelf dog bed, ensuring convenience for pet owners.
Material Selection
I selected Mahogany and Maple for their warm glow and premium quality, aiming to create a crate that owners would proudly display in their homes. This choice aligns with the goal of integrating pet furniture seamlessly into living spaces, enhancing the overall user experience.
Innovative Door Design
The door is engineered to tuck away into the crate when open, using a cabinet hinge attached to drawer slides. This dual-function mechanism allows the door to both swing and slide, encouraging owners to leave the crate open once their dog is acclimated. This design provides a safe and welcoming space for the dog's lifetime, fostering a sense of security and belonging.
Construction Techniques
Employing simple cabinetry techniques, the crate is constructed with pocket screws, which are plugged to eliminate nooks where food could get trapped. The Mahogany slats on top are attached with Maple dowels, creating a visually appealing contrast of white circles from above. The sides feature cane webbing, allowing light to pass through and preventing the crate from resembling a cage.
Safety and Functionality
The door closes with a magnet and is secured with a brass latch, ensuring both ease of use and safety. During testing, the crate performed well with adult dogs. However, puppies tended to chew on the cane webbing, which I would reconsider for future prototypes to enhance durability.
