Swedish ladder
This indoor gymnastics aid is designed to encourage open-ended play for young children. The protruding section can be adjusted to any height. The ladder is intended for children weighing up to 50 lbs but has been tested to support up to 200 lbs.
Design Overview
This Swedish Ladder is designed with a focus on maximizing functionality in a small space. The ladder’s dimensions are determined by wall-stud spacing, ensuring a secure and space-efficient installation.
Key Design Decisions
Space Efficiency: The ladder is designed to fit within standard wall-stud spacing, optimizing its footprint for small spaces.
Cost-Effective Materials: Constructed from pine boards and dowels, the ladder is both economical and sturdy. This choice is a balance between cost efficiency and quality, ensuring accessibility without compromising durability.
Safety and Stability: The boards are attached to the wall studs using 3-inch lag screws, counterbored into the ladder rails to prevent any risk of injury to users. The dowels are inserted into 1-inch deep blind holes in the side rails and further secured with screws, ensuring a robust and safe structure.
Innovative Attachment Mechanism
The horizontal protrusion is anchored to three rungs, with the top anchor point sliding into a rung at an angle and the lower two points bracing against corresponding rungs. This design secures the protruding member while allowing it to be adjusted quickly and easily without tools.
Construction Techniques
The use of simple yet effective construction techniques, such as counterboring lag screws and friction fitting dowels into blind holes, ensures the ladder's stability and longevity.
Personalization and Adaptability
The ladder’s design allows for quick adjustments to the horizontal protrusion, making it versatile and adaptable to various user needs.
